What’s in My Bag? Disneyland Summer Edition!

I’m going to Disneyland again tomorrow, and I wanted to jot up a list of what I’m bringing in hopes that it’ll help others figure out how to pack lightly and efficiently for a day at the parks. I spent a lot of this summer out of town, so it’s  nice to be back home and closer to Anaheim in order to escape for little trips like this. I’m not very good at coordinating the colors and cuteness of what goes into my bag, but I’m pretty sure I’ve covered all of my bases (for my needs), so I hope this helps you too!

First off, I want to address the one thing missing in the big photo below: a water bottle! I have one packed (pictured above) and I definitely recommend that everyone heading to the parks has one handy. Whether it’s summer or winter (though in winter, bring some tea bags to mix it up!) being at the parks means that you’re going to be active, and you need to keep your water up.

With that out of the way, here’s my list:

Backpack – thrift store find with extra pockets inside! It’s light-wearing and pretty tough, but small enough to fit into the pockets provided on the big coasters.

Wallet – Can’t leave home without it!

Phone + R2-D2 case – My trusty Samsung Galaxy S5 has a totally busted screen but a cute case to make up for it. I kill time in lines by reading books and playing games on this thing. (Tip: get the Disneyland app to scope out line wait times, shows, and more)

Sony a5100 Camera + Bag – I’m in love with this camera! It’s great for capturing natural light and learning how to work with a lens (it doesn’t come with one, but the one I have is crafted for the camera) if you’re still a beginner like me.

Coppertone SPF 50+ Sunscreen – A great, light-wearing sunscreen with very little fragrance.

Star Wars Pencil Case – I bought this and 3 others at Target last year when they were all on sale for $1! It is now my makeup bag.

Makeup – Ulta BB Cream (SPF 15), Maybelline Fit Me Set + Smooth Powder, Daiso Eyebrow Duo and Eyeliner pencil, Wet & Wild Max Fanatic Mascara, Wet & Wild natural blend lip balm, Covergirl Star Wars Lipstick #30, Wonder Woman Lip Gloss in Dark Cherry, Daiso Eyelash Curler, Concealer Brush, Powder Brush.

Nail Polish – Forever 21 Gel Look in Silver. (I’m using this with my outfit tomorrow)

I love my lip trio! It doesn’t melt off easily and only really needs a few touch-ups after eating.

mimobot Star Wars Rebels Sabine Portable Charger – this little charger has seen many conventions and road trips!

Compact Mirror – for adjustments and blinding my enemies using the power of the sun.

Lady Speed Stick – This stuff works great for me, so I keep a travel-size stick in my backpack for the parks.

Paper Fan – Daiso’s fans are for light use, but since there were tons and they were all cheap, I bought a bunch to use until I break them all, haha. I love the falling stars design on this one!

Keychain + Lanyard + Annual Pass – Got the lanyard from Home Depot for free when I made new keys! I use the card holder it came with for my Annual Pass.

To top it all off, my bag is sporting a cute Skywalking Through Neverland button, which is one of my favorite podcasts to listen to while waiting in line at the parks.

What do you keep in your bag at Disneyland? I’m always looking for useful tips, so let me know below in the comments!

My First Disneybound: Captain Phasma

(Stick around ’til the end for a bonus vlog with Passholder tips!)

Phew! It’s been a while since I cracked my blogging knuckles. I apologize — life has taken a few great turns, and I’ve decided to ride along with it. Today, though, I’m focusing on something that makes me utterly nervous: my first-ever Disneybound ensemble. I have some incredible friends who have made headlines for their creativity with these outfits, so it feels like I have quite a bit to live up to. For my first outfit, I wanted to go with my favorite now-Disney-owned franchise, Star Wars. As you know, I’m very unpredictable.

With that in mind, my continued and bafflingly unrelenting Captain Phasma obsession made its way into my plans, and I went with it. I’m not exactly happy with the turn-out, but hopefully one day, when I’ve coordinated much more impressive outfits for other events, I can look back on this with a sense of appreciation.

For those not familiar, a “Disneybound” is basically an outfit inspired by Disney properties and characters. It is not a costume — rather, it’s an arrangement of pieces inspired by certain elements or color themes found in its subject. Since both Lucasfilm and Marvel are owned by Disney, there’s a bit of leeway when it comes to what you can use for inspiration. For a better explanation, check out this helpful guide by my pal Sarah Snitch.

Anyway, on to the outfit!

I found the dress at a thrift store and it immediately reminded me of the bold black on Phasma’s mask. While I could have gone with something shinier, this jersey knit high-low dress (paired with dark grey tights) was perfect for both the hot days and cold evenings that tend to happen during Southern California summers. I paired it with black flats (plus comfy insoles to last me for the day) and used a black H&M shoulder bag to carry my things around in.

As for my accessories, I went with mostly reflective “chrome” pieces, including a necklace resembling Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced from Hot Topic. To resemble the bold red on her cape, I found a cute flower crown and went with the “Captain Phasma but as a forest spirit” look.

Have you ever done a Disneybound before? I would love to see your posts for inspiration — and if you’re looking for some, The Nerdy Girlie has plenty of ideas for you to check out!

As promised, here’s that video…

Summer Reading List: June 2015

Summer is just beyond the rain clouds, and with the change of seasons, I’ve decided that it’s time to kick this blog into high gear again! While the weekly podcast and occasional post that gets folks in a huff have seemed to please enough of you, it’s about time I start using this domain proper, and what better way to do that then committing to a summer book review schedule?

That’s right – every other week starting in June, I’ll be reviewing books, comics, and graphic novels thanks to my membership at NetGalley (or my actual money, ha)! These will be honest reviews, and while not all of them may be popular opinion (I loved Lords of the Sith, but most everyone I know totally hated it) you’ll always get what I genuinely believe.

That said, I’ve already got a few reports cooking, so here’s a taste what you can expect this summer:

STAR WARS: Six Women to Watch in the new Canon

In celebration of Women’s History Month, I’m spotlighting some of my favorite new ladies in the STAR WARS canon! We know Leia, Mon Mothma, Padme, Aayla Secura, Asajj Ventress and more – but now, a new crop of awesome, complex women are taking over the STAR WARS universe, and I love all of ‘em!

ALL characters are property of Disney and Lucasfilm, and all publications are also property of Marvel (comics) and Del Rey Publishing (novels).
